Nairobi (and the majority of African cities) are grappling with the problem of informal settlements. Some call these settlements slums, some call them shanty town. Whatever name you tag them, these settlements depict a daily struggle to just live on the margins of life. Social amenities in such areas are virtually non-existent. As a result, the rate of crime and other social ills take root in such settlements. A number of upgrading programmes have been launched by different countries to combat this problem but the reality is that not much success has impacted such efforts.
