Aerial (1)

The best way to see the African geographic landscape is through aerial photos. Indeed, a number of wildlife conservation efforts is undertaken using aerial imagery. This alongside GIS provide essential geospatial data for the protection of wild animals like the African elephant and the white rhino. Some of the aerial photographs can also be obtained via satellite for aerial mapping. Poaching in Africa has necessitated the use of aerial photography and GPS not only for wildlife tracking but also for conservation of endangered species. Another use of aerial imagery relates to the production of documentaries films of wild animals in the African savannah. It also has use in the field of agriculture where geomapping provides insights into forest cover, watershed areas and arable land for cultivation. Of interest to Asili Photos are aerial photos of African safari, land mass cover like the tea estates in Kericho and the wildebeest migration.

Architectural (16)
Architectural (16)

The history of Africa is awash with breath-taking architectural masterpieces. Architectural photography, also called structural photography, centers on this. Some of the architecture design is borrowed from similar structures in the Middle East and the greater Roman Empire, who are in turn influenced by the Greek architecture. Others are indigenous. In essence, religion in Africa has had one of the biggest influence in architecture and design. This is evidently seen in the design of mosques, temples, citadels, fortresses, aqueducts and tombs that employed the use of arches. Indigenous influence is mostly centered on the use of mudbricks to build cities like Kerma, the kingdom of Kush, Timbuktu, the kingdom of Aksum, Hausa, and Ashanti. The use of mud and grass thatch has also been widely used. The kingdom of Buganda, Toro, Bunyoro are some examples. The traditional tata-samba hut in Benin uses this design as well. Most tribes in East Africa used this design as well. This tended to change with the nomadic communities who built semi-circular structures that is easy to setup and dismantle due to the frequent movements. A mix of cow dung and ash was used to smear the floor. Perhaps the biggest showcase of African architecture is in the pyramids built in Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and other places. Some used stones like the pyramids of Giza (Khufu) while others used mud bricks like the Nubian pyramids at Meroe. Additionally, there were stone-carved structures in Ethiopia like the temple of Yeha. A number of national museums conduct history preservation of some of these structures. They include a number of museums in African countries, the Guggenheim museum and other organizations involved in cultural appropriation. Contemporary architects nowadays fuse the modern and the the indigenous designs to bring out the best of Architecture history.

Candid (13)
Candid (13)

Candid photography is all about the subject being unaware that they are being photographed. Because there is no prior preparation, candid photos tend to be very spontaneous. This way, the subject is captured in its most relaxed mood and posture at that point in time. Street photography is one option that best encapsulates this genre, in which at some instances is called stock photography. As such, there may be restrictions to commercial use of such photos especially those shots that feature persons and or property that do not form part of the creative commons licensing model. This can be addressed by using the right channel of licensing by using the appropriate model and property release forms. In essence, because it is instant, candid photos showcase the subject in an ingenuous way within the context of the environment they are in. The situation becomes better if you wish to take candid photos of the wildlife as this breaks loose the licensing limitations. You can shoot awesome candid photos when: the subject is in motion; avoiding prior preparation of the subject; surprising the subject; and by not distracting the subject when such photos are taken. We also have a special case of candid photography called secret photography. How do you achieve this without distracting the subject? Take your camera everywhere you go. This genre of photography is full of spontaneity. Use of long zoom lens also aids in this. It is imperative that you do not use the flash for this kind of photography. It is worthy to take lots of photos by placing yourself in a strategic position. To capture raw emotions, photograph people doing things, especially when with other people. You can also take posed shots into candid photography. For the best of candid royalty free photos, sign up for a free account with us.

The continent is endowed with a variety of African dishes. Save for the perennial food insecurity issues experienced due to inadequate agricultural output, there is plenty of nutritious indigenous foods. In Kenya, Swahili dishes is one of the indigenous delicacies you can find. They include pilau, biryani, chapati, mandazi, mahamri, matobosha, kaimati, mkate wa sinia, vitumbua, ukwaju and mabuyu. Away from the coast, we have inland delicacies that include ugali (the de facto staple food for most Kenyans), mrenda, managu, mursik, githeri, mukimo, irio, nyuka, lentils, African chicken, fish and nyama choma. Across the borders, Ugandans entice us with their matoke. Ethiopians with their injera, kitcha fit fit and tsebhis. Somalis with their arosto and a host of other halal foods. The Nigerians entice us with fufu which is made from cassava, jollof rice and other culinary delights. The Turkana and Toposa of nothern Kenya even partake of crocodile meat in their African cuisine. This has been adopted in the modern culture with crocodile being served in Mamba Village at the coast of Kenya. In recent times, dietary supplements include insects as a delicacy and a pure source of protein in a practice called entomophagy. They include the termite (also called chiswa with variations in names like tsiswa, chintuga, inswa, iswa, sisi, ishwa or esunsun) feasted in East Africa. Crickets, caterpillars, locusts, grasshoppers, mopane worms and palm weevils also form part of the delicacy. Palm weevil larva is common among the baka pygmy of the congo basin. Africa is endowed with vast and beautiful landscapes that dot the land. From natural land formations like the Great Rift Valley that stretches all the way from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Our landscape photography segment focuses on such landforms as well as ordinary landscape photos in people's homes, outdoor, and other environmental settings. In essence, our aim is to capture and showcase what Africa has to offer in the beauty of its landscape. We feature landscape pictures of desert landscape and sand dunes of the Sahara desert, Kalahari desert, and Chalbi desert. Water bodies like the Nile, Victoria Falls, Limpopo, Trans Vaal, Niger Delta and the surrounding seas and oceans. Forests like the Congo Basin, Kakamega Forest, Arabuko Sokoke, Upper Guinea forest, and the Miombo Woodlands that forms part of the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. Landscape photographers will also have a field day working on urban landscape and city landscape images. It is also noteworthy to mention the Equator landmarks that crosses a number of African countries. African national parks and game reserves also provide a rich biodiversity for taking landscape photos. This can be coupled with African wildlife habitat. African landscape architecture represented in the homes constructed in the villages is also a point of note, especially the mostly nomadic homes of the Nilotic tribes gracing the African Savannah.

NIght-Long Exposure (1)
NIght-Long Exposure (1)

Our night long exposure photography category focuses on two main areas; movement of traffic along a busy highway at night and the scenic view of the clear sky of an African night. In this setting, it is imperative that the photo shoot is conducted after sunset when there is low light. Apart from the aperture and ISO, shutter speeds play a big role here. And since the shutter will be open for a longer period, the photographer is better off mounting their DSLR camera on a tripod to prevent motion blur. The idea is to capture continuous movement which is illuminated by ambient light. Some photographer will even opt for wide angle lenses which are recommended if you are doing astrophotography or night sky photography.
